quitting nicotine usually only lasts a month or so, but you can be mentally struggling with cigarettes for a long time.

depending on how long you smoke and how many cigarettes you smoke a day, nicotine withdrawal symptoms can last from a few days to weeks.

nicotine withdrawal includes physical, mental and emotional symptoms. the first week, especially days 3 to 5, is always the badest. that’s when nicotine is being wiped from your body and your body starts to get headaches, cigarette cravings and insomnia.

most problems happen in the first two weeks after leaving. if you can overcome them, the physical symptoms will begin to fade but you will still struggle with mental and emotional challenges such as anxiety, depression and irritability. they also decrease after a few weeks.

everyone is different and withdrawal symptoms depend on a lot of things, such as how long and how many packs a day you smoked. but in most cases, you can expect to have these common physical problems when you quit smoking:

  • increased appetite: within a day or so of the last cigarette, your appetite will increase for a while. cigarettes bind to brain receptors that increase the secretion of the serotonin and dopamine transporter from the brain. these two chemicals reduce hunger, so when they’re out of your system, you want to eat more. many people also find that they eat to fill the smoking time, and unfortunately, you may have cravings for more carbohydrates and sweets. the first 2 weeks are the badest time, most people gain about 5 to 10 pounds in an effort to quit smoking.
  • cravings for nicotine are the symptom you will struggle with for the longest time and can start only 30 minutes after your last cigarette. each craving lasts only 15 to 20 minutes, but they will continue. you should do your best to avoid stimulants (such as drinking alcohol or being around people who smoke) and find ways to get rid of your every craving.
  • cough: when nicotine is around, your respiratory system can’t clean itself well. as your body does, you’ll probably have a cough that can take a few weeks.
  • headaches and dizziness: these are usually mild, and are often the first crack marks to appear and are the first symptom to go away.
  • fatigue: nicotine is a stimulant and strengthens you, so without it you will probably feel tired, but you will also be restless and may experience insomnia.
  • constipation: in the first month, constipation can be another unpleasant side effect.
