The United Nations: A Shell of Its Former Self
As the United Nations approaches its 80th anniversary, a fundamental question arises: does this institution still serve its intended purpose, or has it been reduced to nothing more than a hollow shell? An examination of four recent wars suggests that what remains of the UN is more symbolic than functional in maintaining international peace and security.
The Russia–Ukraine War: Security Council in the Cage of Veto
Since 2022, the war in Ukraine has become Europe’s largest security crisis. Yet the UN has done little beyond issuing statements. Every resolution against Russia is swiftly blocked by Moscow’s veto, often supported by China. Instead of preserving peace, the Security Council has turned into a stage for great-power rivalry.
The Israel–Syria Conflict: Unanswered Aggression
Israel has repeatedly struck Syrian territory without a single binding resolution passed against it. Damascus’s complaints at the UN result only in reports and warnings. This reality underscores the UN’s impotence when Western allies are involved.
The Israel–Yemen War: Lawlessness in the Red Sea
Yemen has raised the issue of Israeli strikes on Hodeidah port and attacks on shipping in the Red Sea at the Security Council. Yet U.S. pressure has prevented any meaningful action. While Yemen suffers a humanitarian catastrophe, the UN is reduced to the role of a passive observer.
The Iran–Israel Conflict: A Crisis of Legitimacy
Whether in direct or proxy confrontations, the Iran–Israel conflict has also exposed the UN’s dysfunction. U.S. vetoes block any move against Israel, while Iran dismisses the UN as illegitimate in mediating. The organization no longer functions even as a neutral broker.
A Hollow Shell of a Grand Ideal
The Security Council is paralyzed by vetoes; the General Assembly is a platform for speeches; and UN agencies are constrained by financial and political pressures. The organization that was once envisioned as the guardian of global peace has been reduced to a historical relic — more an archive of past aspirations than a relevant actor in world affairs.
Conclusion
Unless sweeping reforms are implemented in the Security Council and the UN’s decision-making mechanisms, the institution risks being remembered merely as a symbol without substance — a name and a building that endure, while its spirit and mission have long since faded.
